Recording list for Head First Design Patterns for CFML presentations

The Dallas/Ft. Worth ColdFusion User Group (DFWCFUG) has been working through the book Head First Design Patterns, taking the Java-centric code examples in the chapters and implementing them in ColdFusion to see how they may apply to us as ColdFusion developers.  By popular demand, here is the

  • Chapter 1: HFDP for CF - Intro and The Strategy Pattern
    Presenter:  Dave Shuck
    Date: 9/8/2009
Description:  We will begin our new series of presentations as we walk though Head First Design Patterns in CFML. HFDP is widely regarded as a valuable resource for learning about development design patterns. Our goal for this series will be to take one chapter at a time, creating the examples in CFML, and exploring how each pattern might be useful for us as CFML developers. The plan is to send my HFDP book home with someone at each meeting, giving them the opportunity to create the presentation for the following meeting. That person will bring the book back when they present and pass it onto the next person and repeat that process until we have covered the book. This month, Dave Shuck will be leading off with Chapter 1, which covers a general introduction of design patterns, and an exploration of the Strategy Pattern.

We are taking each chapter out of the HFDP book and writing ColdFusion implementations of each pattern that is covered. So far we have broken down the Strategy Pattern and the Observer Pattern. November brings us to Chapter 3 - The Decorator Pattern. Adrian Moreno will be presenting this topic as our main session of the night.

Dave, these recordings look really interesting but the links on some expect a loginId. Can you make them open to all please?

Dave, Are any of the code samples available as mentioned in the first video? I looked briefly on the site but did not see them.

Hi all,
good idea. i'd know if you have written or will write any public document on the various chapter, as long as audio/video, here, quality is not sufficient to understand.

do you know if the code from the presentations will be available for download?
I just watched the presentation for the observer pattern and the sound skipped several times making the explanations being ahead of the slides.

I came across this series while watching the list of presentations on UGTV. I think this is a great idea and I applaud your initiative.
I'd like to know if there are any code downloads for the different presentations.
Would you guys provide the code to have some kind of start in trying to understand how the book chapters apply to CF? I've been trying to go through the book and write my own CFCs and these presentations are now an invaluable source for me.

Thank you so much

For all that have asked for code examples, I did have these attached to the Adobe Groups site, but with the recent switch to new software done by Raymond Camden, all materials were trashed. I have sent out a message to all presenters asking for the original samples, but have as of yet not gotten responses. Please follow me on twitter @dshuck and I will make sure to update when I get it.

As for the password requirement, the default setting on recordings is to mark them as private and I had inadvertently forgotten to make those public. They should be accessible now.

Lastly, I have just added two more presentations to this list (Ch. 8: The Template Pattern - Adrian Moreno and Ch. 9: The Iterator and Composite Patterns - Dave Shuck)

Enjoy!

Thank you so much for posting these Dave. A colleague is currently working through the book and I was interested in doing the same. However, I don't have any Java or C# experience so these recordings will be an excellent resource.

Will the other chapters that you have already done also be put up here (e.g. Chapter 10)?

Again, thank you for taking the time to post these. Great resource to CFML developers around the world.

Cheers
Mark

Mark, I am glad you found this useful. I am cramming in some last minute touchups on my presentation for Dallas TechFest tomorrow, but will attempt to do so when I wrap up tonight. If you don't see them by tomorrow night, my feeble mind probably needs a jolt, so feel free to ping me and remind me. Twitter @dshuck.
